The guide
In town for a wedding or just visiting? Here's how locals would spend a perfect weekend in Charleston, where to eat, shop, and explore.
The Perfect Charleston Weekend: A Day-by-Day Guide
The short answer: mornings for the historic district and coffee, midday for shopping and lunch downtown, evenings for a sunset spot and dinner reservation booked well in advance. Here's how to break it down across a full weekend.
Friday: Arrival & Easing In
Start slow. Check into your hotel, then walk the historic district before the afternoon heat sets in, Rainbow Row, the Battery, and the side streets off King Street are best explored on foot in the morning or early evening light.
For dinner, book ahead, Charleston's best tables fill up fast, especially on weekends. A rooftop or waterfront spot is a good way to ease into the trip and get your bearings on the city's layout.
What to wear: Something breathable that can go from a daytime walk to a casual dinner without a full outfit change, a linen dress or relaxed set works well here.
Saturday: The Full Charleston Day
Morning: Coffee and a walk through the Charleston City Market, then browse King Street's boutiques while the morning light is still soft and the streets aren't yet crowded.
Midday: Lunch downtown, then more time exploring, this is the ideal window to visit the surrounding King Street shops, since the street comes alive by early afternoon.
Afternoon: A carriage tour or a visit to one of the historic house museums gives good context on the city if it's your first visit.
Evening: Golden hour by the water ,the Battery or Waterfront Park are both easy, walkable options for sunset — followed by dinner at a spot that takes reservations well in advance.
What to wear: A dress or elevated separates that can carry from afternoon shopping into evening drinks, this is where a versatile silk piece earns its keep.
Sunday: A Slower Morning
Brunch is a Charleston institution, plan for a wait at the popular spots, or book ahead if the restaurant allows it. Spend the rest of the morning at a spot with outdoor seating, then use the afternoon for anything you didn't get to on Saturday: a final walk through the historic district, a last stop at a boutique, or simply enjoying the porch of wherever you're staying before heading out.
Where to Shop in Charleston
King Street is the heart of it, a mix of national names and independent boutiques within a walkable stretch. Plan for at least half a day here if shopping is a priority, since the street rewards a slower pace over a rushed run-through.
Best Time of Year to Visit Charleston
Spring (March–May) and fall (late September–November) offer the most comfortable weather for walking the city extensively. Summer is beautiful but hot and humid, plan outdoor activities for morning or evening, and build in air-conditioned breaks midday.
What to Pack for a Charleston Weekend
Breathable fabrics, comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones, and at least one elevated outfit for dinner reservations. If you're in town for a wedding as well, plan a separate, dedicated outfit for that
