Meet Ulla johnson
Some brands chase a trend. Ulla Johnson built hers around something slower: the idea that a garment should carry the hand of the person who made it. That instinct, more than any single silhouette, is what defines the label now landing at Gwynn's.
Who Is Ulla Johnson
Ulla Johnson founded her eponymous label in 1999, right out of the University of Michigan, launching with five tailored separates and five thousand dollars of her own money. Barney's picked up the collection within the year, and the brand has been building from that same instinct ever since. Johnson runs the company from SoHo and has since opened boutiques on Bleecker Street and in Amagansett.
What Makes the Brand Different
The label's aesthetic gets described as free spirited and transportive, but the real signature is in how the clothes get made. Johnson works directly with artisans and craftspeople across Peru, Kenya, India, Uruguay, the Philippines, and other regions, building pieces around techniques like hand embroidery and traditional weaving rather than treating them as a print on a swatch. It is luxury that points outward, toward the people and places behind the work, instead of just the label inside the collar.
New at Gwynn's
Two pieces from the label just arrived: the Willow Embellished Wide Leg Jean and the Bobbi Embellished Denim Jacket, both in embellished umber. The embellishment is dense enough to read as a statement piece but placed with enough restraint that either one works with a plain tee or a tailored blouse just as easily as it works together as a set.
How to Style It in Charleston
Wear the Bobbi jacket open over a simple slip dress for a dinner on King Street, or let the Willow jean anchor a daytime look with a fitted knit and boots. Both pieces are built to be the one detail people ask about, so keep the rest of the outfit quiet.
